Mona Kuhn: Evidence

PA51H Hardcover - Mona Kuhn: Evidence
!
Critics have observed that Mona Kuhn’s subjects seem “nude but not naked…completely relaxed before the camera, they give the impression that nothing could clothe them better than their own skin.”

Kuhn, who photographs in the naturist or nudist community, often in domestic interiors, weaves together gestures from the traditional iconography of nude studies with the comfortable body language of her subjects, creating a visual patois at once classical and contemporary. 11.5 x 12.25 — 88 pages (54 color).

Naked New York - Greg Friedler

SN01S Softcover - Naked New York - Greg Friedler
!
This book is the manifestation of photographer Greg Friedler’s desire to document the various types of people who exist within humanity, a desire driven by my intense curiosity in what people do, how they live, and in their existence.
Each photograph is of a person clothed and naked in order to show the two sides of the same person, the public as well as the private. The clothed version, as they are seen everyday in society, is only part of the truth. It is almost as if we were blind. The blind can only achieve one sense of a person through their hearing, just as we, the sighted, only have one sense of a clothed individual. You will find it an extraordinary coffee-table book worthy of your naturist sensibilities.

Painted Bodies

PA01H Hardcover - Painted Bodies
!
NEW - Photography by Roberto Edwards
340 full-color illustrations, 336 pages, 11" x 14", weighs 7 lbs. Full of magic and boldness, this unique volume presents dynamic photographs of nude bodies painted by forty-five artists for this project.
The inspiration for the project comes from history: human beings have painted their bodies since the beginning of time. Christopher Columbus was faced by natives with painted bodies when he first set foot on American soil. Each of the forty-five painters invited to participate expresses a distinctive style in their approach to body art. Some attempt to replicate primitive body painting, while others make full use of modern sophistication. The treatments vary widely, from painted-on clothes, complete with lace and zippers, to bodies bearing street scenes or faces, to completely abstract paintings highlighting the expressionistic use of the body as canvas. The resulting collaboration is a collection of endless varied and thought-provoking photographs of the modern application of an ancient art.

Pure Dance: Photographs of the Stuttgart Ballet

PT06H Hardcover - Pure Dance: Photographs of the Stuttgart Ballet
!
Here is a collection of dance photographs unlike any other.
In a series of breathtakingly beautiful pictures taken over a period of five years, Dieter Blum focuses his astute camera on 37 of the 53 dancers in the world-renowned Stuttgart Ballet to explore the sculptural aspects of this exquisitely schooled human form; its strength, suppleness, discipline, mystery and possibilities for movement. Because all of the male and female dancers are photographed in the nude, Blum succeeds in capturing the dynamic movement, musicality, and magic of these classically trained dance artists. Each photograph becomes a distilled, evocative frozen fragment of an art form that by its nature is fleeting and ephemeral. 196 pages 109 color photographs (many are 2 page spreads). 11” x 14”.

Radiant Identities

In the pages of this book, Sturges's work is presented for the first time exactly as he always wished for it to be seen.
“The quiet, conservative design throws all the aesthetic work directly to the pictures and their subjects, which is where it belongs.” he says. In addition to his subjects' great beauty and kindness, his pictures often draw heavily on what he thinks of as spirit of naturism. “These families are at peace with themselves, both physically and emotionally”—Jock Sturges. Softcover, 96 pages, 10½”x 11½”.

Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition

PA55H Hardcover - Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition
!
This groundbreaking book explores the relationship between the photography of Robert Mapplethorpe and Classical art, in particular through Mannerist engravings and sculpture. The pairing of works is among the first collaborations between the Guggenheim Museum and the State Hermitage Museum.
Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition exemplifies the artist’s rapport with the elongated and elaborate forms of Mannerist art, namely the study of the human body, highlighting the underlying classicism evident in the clarity and potency of all Mapplethorpe’s subjects, as well as their explosive energy. The classical ideal was not only a poetic inspiration but also an ethical model and, in his creative quest, Mapplethorpe described photography as “the perfect way to make a sculpture.” The potency of love and Eros, which electrifies many of the Mannerist works shown here, is articulated again in the work of Mapplethorpe. The vital anatomical forms of his portraits of models such as bodybuilder Lisa Lyons and the statuesque Derrick Cross find their roots in Antiquity, and here they find their mirror in the likes of Jan Harmensz Muller’s Sabine woman and Jacob Matham’s Apollo. The Hermitage’s superb collection of Italian painting and sculpture amply illustrates the course of Italian art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century and includes an impressive collection of Mannerist works. Approximately 50 Mannerist works from the Hermitage collection are paired with the same number of works by Mapplethorpe from the Guggenheim’s collection. Hardcover, 10” x 11”; 208 pgs. 168 color.

Sally Mann: Immediate Family

PA40S Softcover - Sally Mann: Immediate Family
!
Mann shares with her readers glimpses into the life of her family and its children.
Taken against the Arcadian backdrop of her woodland home in Virginia, these photos reveal a family so familiar and comfortable with their familial roles that only the photographer seems concerned with the nuances that shape these lives. We, as readers, feel like family members as we share the unposed events that define this family. Sally Mann's three children, Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia, experience the type of clothing-optional, adventurous, and playful childhood that seems almost utopian. Her work has been described as eroticising children. Indeed the children, often nude or partially clothed, present sensual poses to the photographer. However, Mann argues that these are the innocent poses of children that are often times misinterpreted by adults. Softcover, Black/White.

On display are people crammed into acrylic boxes, stacked in sets, on end, or sometimes alone. The Spirit of Lady Godiva

PA802L Leatherbound - The Spirit of Lady Godiva
!
This unique book, eight years in the making, presents Harvey’s photographs of nudes in public places. Lots of nude people — women and men, young and old. But there’s a twist: right next to them are unsuspecting clothed people.
The result may be hilarious or look impossible — but it’s real. The photos are completely unaltered. Yes, that nude man really is leaving a store with a pocket watch. Yes, those two nude women really are walking past a police station. And yes indeed, there are nearly two dozen nude people lounging on an outdoor terrace in lots of clothed company! From New York to Los Angeles, New Orleans to Madison, Harvey has captured an incredible variety of scenes, including famous landmarks, all with nude people right there. The nudity is simple and natural: no hiding of body parts, no streaking or flashing, no teasing or flaunting. These nude people behave just like anyone else while ordering a meal, buying flowers, sitting on a bench, or hailing a cab. Over 130 large photos fill this amazing book, with lively stories about all the scenes. Plus a preface where Harvey explains his art, and an introduction by an international expert on nudity, Paul Rapoport. This book will astound you with its humor, honesty, imagination, and wonderful attitude towards nudity. 12" x 9", 280 pp., b&w. Hardcover.

Uncovered: Women in Word and Image

PM01H Hardcover - Uncovered: Women in Word and Image
!
Over a period of six years, Jordan Matter photographed over 100 women bare-breasted across New York City. They varied in age, education, and profession. Everyone was a volunteer. Every subject faced reactions to her decision to defy convention, and many confronted feelings of shame and inadquacy. But after the shoots, the women were unexpectedly euphoric – and Matter wondered just what he had uncovered.

Jordan Matter’s Uncovered, with an introduction by Susan Seligson, may be one of today’s most important new contributions to naturist sensibilities in a time of repression, increased human degradation and Internet exploitation. Here comes a truly wonderful and timely rendition of the power and beauty of real women, center-stage in society without the cloak.
Jordan addresses and takes advantage of New York women’s legal right to be topfree in public where he sets the stage for artistic wonderment. He even credits New York’s police with a sense of  humor, patience, and respect, though he would try to avoid distracting them whenever possible.
Each image is like a glimpse of sanity, a shining light on real people amidst darkened sensibilities. He make no intentional attempt to flatter the participants’ sense of self as glamour beauties in his photos, though many of them could easily qualify. Instead, he finds deeper meaning and beauty that all participants share; he uncovers the myth, and exposes the power.
Here are women of New York, uncovered in New York amidst New Yorkers in topfree glory and contrast. The book offers thoughtful presentations of extraordinary moments created in collaboration with each subject. The subjects are not “models,” but women who believed in the importance of this project. These brave uncovered heroines willingly helped to contribute not only their physical participation, but also their thoughts.
